The Burning Sultans
The Sapphire Shore
The Sapphire Shore is an oasis in the eastern portion of the Sandsea Confederacy, part of the network of oases overseen by the Azure Sultanate. It is also the hometown of Anans Duneskipper, with whom you traveled for a time. Though small, it is one of the more bustling, cosmopolitan settlements under the jurisdiction of the elf sultans. Traders of nearly every description can be found thronging its palm-lined promenades and doing brisk business under the canopies of the bazaar. This is not to say that it is an open, free market, however. The entire settlement is surrounded by a stockade, and kept under the watchful gaze of a small garrison of local guards.
The resident population of the Sapphire Shore, as with all of the sultanate’s holdings, is almost entirely comprised of elves, with some humans, half-elves, and halflings to be found here and there. Those who are not involved in the water trade primarily work in support industries catering to the merchants that pass through. Textile shops, stables, gambling houses, and spas can all be found along the Sapphire Shore. Most food is bought from trade caravans, though some foods are grown using waters from the oasis. Again like the rest of the sultanate’s settlements, the church of Eidala is the primary religion within the walls of the Sapphire Shore. Worship of other deities is technically allowed, with a few non-denominational chapels available for visitors’ use, but all are expected to respect the cessations of trade activity that accompany morning, noon, and evening prayers.
