The Burning Sultans
Meren is the goddess of earth and of death, and patron goddess to the races of dwarves and gnomes. She is sister to the goddess Eidala and the god Khalim, with the three forming a triumviral relationship over much of creation. Her titles include the Lady of Sands, Warden of the End, and Dwarfmother. She teaches her followers to neither cheat death nor fear it, for death is a natural stage of life. Travelers often pray both to her as well as Adaster before undertaking a journey, beseeching her to provide favorable conditions in their travels. She is sometimes characterized as capricious for the ways in which she causes the sands to shift, making many lose their way and leading some to death as a result. Generally, however, she is viewed as a fair and judicious deity. Her symbol is a crossed pick and forge hammer over a stylized dune.
Merenite houses of worship are often structures that have been carved out of the ground, extending downward rather than up and appearing quite squat from the outside as a result. Merenite priests clothe themselves in plain, russet-colored robes, and often have sandstone ornaments woven into their hair and beards as a sign of rank. They are called upon frequently to perform funerary rites as well as the necessary ceremonies for the Day of the Dead celebrations. The seat of the church is located in the Ivory Mesa.
